Following a Cabinet decision of the state government to establish Village Defence Force with an aim to protect villages, a recruitment rally was held today for Imphal west, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts. The recruitment rally for Imphal west district was held at 2nd MR parade ground from 7 am, Thoubal district at Thoubal Basu ground and Bishnupur district at Bishnupur Mini Stadium ground. The candidates were tested in 800 meter race, long jump and push ups etc.In today`s recruitment, above 750 candidates came for the 350 posts for Imphal west, above 3000 candidates for the 500 posts for Thoubal district, and above 1000 candidates for 350 posts for Bishnupur district.Regarding the recruitment of VDF held at 2nd MR parade ground, the superintendent of police said that today`s test was conducted from Sl. No. 1 to 500 and the remaining will be held tomorrow. He also added that the VDF recruits are to be trained for one month at MPTS, Pangei and will be attached to MR, IRB and police outposts of Imphal west after their training. He further said that the VDF will be for one year but it may also be extended and their monthly salary is Rs. 3000.Mention may be made that the present recruitment of VDF is a fallout of the incident at Heirok in 2008, during the festival of Holi, when some armed persons fired in a crowd and killed some innocent peoples. In response to the demand of the people of Heirok for arms to protect themselves, the state government approved recruitment of 300 SPO and they were trained at MPTS. In January the state Cabinet took a decision to convert SPOs to VDF and also agreed to recruit VDF for other districts as well. Meanwhile, a release from senior superintendent of Police, Imphal West District, Manipur asked candidates, excluding disqualified ones, who could not join the selection of Village Defence Forces (VDF) in respect of Imphal west district on February 16, 2009 at the 2nd MR parade ground, to reach by 7 am February 17 along with certificates of Class VIII, age proof certificate and appropriate dress for Physical Efficient Test (PET).
